They're having a great season and the addition of Royce Lewis will strengthen their depth whether he plays shortstop or centerfield.
Surprise leaders in the AL Central after finishing 59-103 past year, the Twins spent their No. 1 pick on speedy Royce Lewis, a slick-fielding shortstop out of JSerra Catholic High School in California.
It was the third time the Twins were up first - the previous year was 2001, when they grabbed hometown high school catcher Joe Mauer with the top choice. It wasn't until the morning of the draft that Lewis was mentioned as a candidate to go No. 1 overall. "It was an unbelievable feeling".
The Toronto Blue Jays took North Carolina shortstop Logan Warmoth with the 22nd overall selection.
The first of four prospects in attendance at the draft site to be selected, Greene was asked to give a scouting report on himself as a pitcher. The team will also have the 35th overall pick out of the "competitive balance" portion of the draft. First base/ outfield signee Reynaldo Rivera was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the second round (57th overall), which carries a slot value of $1,148,400.
High school coach Brett Kay had high praise for his star back in April.
"Hunter is an extremely athletic and very talented high school prospect who has been on the scene for many years", Buckley said.
But the Twins classified him as a shortstop when Manfred made the announcement at MLB Network studios. They passed on Green and instead selected California high school shortstop/center fielder Royce Lewis with the No. 1 pick.
The Twins are 1-1 in terms of picking first in the MLB Draft. "He checked all the boxes for us".
The Aliso Viejo, CA native was a member of the gold medal-winning USA Baseball 18U National Team in the fall of 2016 that defeated Cuba in October for the 2016 COPABE Pan American AAA Championship.
"Well, I can't tell you if we're going to go for position players or pitchers", he told reporters June 2.
Greene, chosen as a pitcher, also played shortstop at Notre Dame High School, but a fastball that can reach 100 miles per hour has the Reds projecting him as a future ace. He was also featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in May 2017, which introduced the baseball phenom to the world.
"I'd take him to a game when he was 2, and he'd sit in my lap and watch everything", William said. "I would have loved to have seen him stay behind the plate". The Reds appear set on using Greene as a pitcher, at least at first, but they could be tempted to use his bat as well.

But what Hill and his coaching staff are doing is to train their players - draft eligible or not - to be mentally focused, play in the moment and eliminate what can happen if someone gets too wrapped up in the hoopla, anxiety and fear that only serves as a distraction.
Selecting Lewis with the first pick came as a bit of a surprise. Today is Monday, June 12, and the first day of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
McKay was considered a top 10 talent both on the mound and at first base, so many folks were eager to see whether he'd be drafted as a pitcher or hitter. He hit.390 with 14 home runs and had 56 RBIs this season, and his OBP of.491 was among the best in the country. As a senior, he was 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA over 5 appearances, collecting 43 strikeouts with just 4 walks over 28.0 innings pitched.
"It's just awesome, getting to swing it every day, play every day", McKay said in an interview with MLB Network.
"We know he's going to be a leader the second he steps on the field".
Atlanta selected Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright - who grew up a Braves fan - with the No. 5 pick, looking to augment a large stable of touted arms already in the team's farm system. Houston Astros: RHP J.B. Bukauskas, North Carolina 16.
UC Irvine second baseman Keston Hiura was the ninth pick. Only three of them were chosen out of high school.
Even if he doesn't get taken first overall, it doesn't seem likely that McKay will have long to wait. If they wanted an arm then Hunter Greene or Brendan McKay would make the most sense, and early predictions show that the Twins would lean toward McKay.
Rounding out the top 10, the Los Angeles Angels drafted outfielder Jordon "Jo" Adell out of Ballard High School in Louisville.
"This is exactly the kind of kid we desperately need", says one major league official. His mid-90s fastball, biting slider and easy delivery still kept many teams interested.
The Twins liked him enough to take him late a year ago, but he went back to school and it worked out for him. Rounds 3-10 on Tuesday and rounds 11-40 on Wednesday will be held via conference calls with teams.
