Khan had told Londoners there was "no reason to be alarmed" about an increased police presence in the coming days following the attack, a remark Trump mischaracterized in a Sunday tweet, suggesting the mayor had said there was "no reason to be alarmed" about the attack itself.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has asked the British government to cancel the state visit by Donald Trump after being criticised by the US President on terror attack in London.
"Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement".
Khan can carp all he likes about Trump's nasty tweets, but at the end of the day he'll still be presiding over a city with an obvious terrorism problem.
"State visits are given to world leaders who have had a distinguished service, who have a track record, and in the circumstances, where Donald Trump as president had a Muslim ban, had changed the policies of the U.S., the long-standing policies around refugees, in the circumstances when many British people disagree with many of Donald Trump's policies, we shouldn't be having a state visit".
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not think it was fair to characterise Trump's tweets as "picking a fight" with Khan, who is the first Muslim elected as London mayor.
British Prime Minister Theresa May was among those who came to Khan's defense, though she declined to criticize Trump over the row. Trump has used the policy, stalled now in USA courts, as an example of the sort of toughness that he says Khan refuses to show amid terrorism attacks that are riling the United Kingdom.

Attacks at the London Bridge and Borough Market kill seven and injure nearly 50.
Mr Khan has called for the US President's planned state visit to the United Kingdom to be scrapped, but Mrs May said Mr Trump's controversial trip would go ahead. Mr Trump was quoting Mr Khan from a recent interview.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan leaves after observing a minutes' silence with London ambulance staff in London on June 6, 2017, in memory of the victims of the June 3 terror attacks.
The acting U.S. ambassador to the UK, Lewis Lukens, meanwhile appeared to distance himself from Trump's initial tweet, writing on Sunday: "I commend the strong leadership of the mayor of London as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack".
"Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days".
A day after bombings in NY and New Jersey, Khan tells The London Standard that attacks are "part and parcel" of life in major cities.
"I've been doing far more important things over the last 24 hours", he says. That didn't help, but the whole thing really started over a year ago - when Khan was running around telling everyone that Trump was ignorant, and that he hoped Trump would lose the election.
