Intel said that nearly all of the Core X chips are built on an updated version of the Skylake X architecture with the exception of the two 4-core versions, the i5-7640X and the i7-7740X, which are based on Kaby Lake. Rival AMD named it's top end processors Ryzen 7 in a deliberate attempt to compete with Intel's current Core i7 range, at what it says is a much lower price.
Rounding off the Core X family is the entry level i5 variant - the i5-7640X, which can only run 4-cores/4 threads but is priced attractively at $242. (Intel claims that the Core X series reaches 10 percent faster multithread performance over the previous generation, and 15 percent faster single thread).

Award-winning sports writer Frank Deford dies at 78
Frank Deford , who is widely regarded as one of the greatest sports journalists ever, has died at the age of 78 . Among Deford's gems: "I believe that professional wrestling is clean and everything else in the world is fixed".
At the launch event Intel demoed a PC running a Core X-Series processor that was live streaming someone playing a virtual reality game to Twitch. It's also launching the $389 7800X, which contains six cores and lacks Turbo Boost 3.0 support (it does support Intel's older, complementary Turbo Boost 2.0 technology). That's only ringing in at 16 cores, which somehow seems inadequate now with Intel's announcement.
Skylake-X parts use an updated processor architecture that should yield performance improvements relative to the Broadwell-E parts at identical core counts and frequencies, the company said. The company points out that while the additional cores on the Core X models will improve multitasking performance, the addition of technologies like Turbo Boost Max 3.0 ensures that each core is also able to achieve improved performance.
The chipmaker also introduced the entirely new Intel Core i9 processor, representing the highest performance for advanced gaming, VR and content creation. However, the most powerful of them all, the Intel Core i9 7980 XE would feature 18 cores and 36 Threads!
At last year's Computex Intel launched its first 10-core consumer CPU, and now (as if that wasn't already enough) the new top-end i9-7980XE sports 18-cores and is the first Intel consumer chip to pack in over a teraflop of computing power.
