The remarkable find is the first of its kind in the area, the antiquities ministry said on Saturday.
Six stone coffins, two clay coffins and two papyri were also found alongside at least seventeen mummies.
Khaled al-Anani, the Antiques Minister, said the because of the way that the mummies have been preserved, it most likely means that they are officials or priests. The discoveries likely date back to the Greco-Roman period, which lasted for almost six centuries after Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC.
Egyptologist Salah al-Kholi told a news conference held near the desert site that the discovery was "the first human necropolis found in central Egypt with so many mummies".
